Etymology: < trainer n. + -ess suffix1. In sense 1 after Dutch †sleyperesse (1648 in an apparently isolated attestation: see quot. 1648; < slijper person who drags something along (1610; < slijpen to drag (see slipe v.1) + -er -er suffix1) + -esse -ess suffix1).In quot. 1959 at sense 2 translating ancient Greek ἀλείπτρια, feminine form corresponding to ἀλείπτης physical trainer, anointer (see aleiptic adj.).
