Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: star n.1, apple n.
Etymology: < star n.1 + apple n.The fruit is the size of a large apple, and when cut across shows ten cells forming a starlike figure.
Any of several tropical trees of the genus Chrysophyllum (family Sapotaceae), esp. C. cainito, also more fully star apple tree; the edible fruit of such a tree, a medium-sized berry which is frequently purple, with milky juice and a radiating star pattern in the pulp.Quot. 1693 refers to a variety of apple belonging to the genus Malus (family Rosaceae).
