Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. tragico-farcical Brit. /ˌtradʒᵻkəʊˈfɑːsᵻkl/, U.S. /ˌtrædʒəkoʊˈfɑrsək(ə)l/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin tragico-.
Etymology: < classical Latin tragico-, combining form (apparently only in tragico-cōmoedia tragico-comedy n.) of tragicus tragic adj. Compare tragi- comb. form.Attested earliest at the beginning of the 17th cent. in the Latin adaptation tragico-comedy n. Formations within English are found from the first half of the 17th cent.; compare e.g. quot. 1648.
Forming adjectives and nouns with the sense ‘tragic and ——’ or ‘tragic ——’, as tragico-farcical, tragico-historical; tragico-farce, etc. Cf. tragi- comb. form.
