Etymology: = French tormentille (1314 in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), < medieval Latin tormentilla , in form diminutive of tormentum : see torment n. Reason of name obscure: compare quot. 1600 at sense a; according to others from its being used to relieve the gripes, Latin tormina.
a. A low-growing herb, Potentilla tormentilla ( Tormentilla repens), N.O. Rosaceæ, of trailing habit, common on heaths and dry pastures, bearing small four-petalled yellow flowers, and having strongly astringent roots; in use from early times in medicine, and in tanning. Also called septfoil.
