Etymology: < the genitive of trade n. + folk n., after tradesman n. and tradeswoman n. Compare earlier tradespeople n.
Now somewhat archaic.
In singular (with plural agreement) and plural (now rare). People engaged in trading or the sale of goods and commodities; esp. shopkeepers. Also: people engaged in a trade or a skilled manual occupation; artisans, craftspeople.
