1936 Amer. Speech 11 375/2 Toots used to be used in families here and there as a nickname, or a term of endearment, the vowel sounded as in ‘boots’... Is this term the ancestor of the present mode of address in ‘O.K., toots!’, ‘Hello, toots!’ etc., the vowel shortened into that of ‘full’?
