单词 toxo-
释义

toxo-comb. form1

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Forms: before a vowel tox-; compare tox- comb. form.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin toxo-; Greek τοξο-.
Etymology: < scientific Latin toxo- and its etymon ancient Greek τοξο-, combining form (in e.g. τοξόκλυτος famed for archery) of τόξον bow (see note); compare -o- connective. Compare toxon n.2Ancient Greek τόξον is of unknown origin. It may represent a loanword, perhaps from Iranian, the Iranians being renowned as archers, although some scholars have argued that the early attestation of the Greek word (compare Mycenaean Greek to-ko-so-to archer) makes this less plausible. Compare French toxo-.
combining form representing Greek τόξον bow, in toxocampid n. and adj., Toxodon n., toxology n., toxophilite n., etc.
