Tollens'(s) reagent: a solution of ammoniacal silver nitrate and sodium hydroxide, used as a test for aldehydes with which it reacts to give a silver precipitate; so Tollens' test (described by Tollens 1882, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 15 1828).
