单词 jewess
释义

Jewessn.

Brit. /dʒuːˈɛs/, /ˈdʒuːᵻs/, /ˈdʒuːɛs/, U.S. /ˈdʒuəs/
Forms: Middle English Iuwesse, Middle English Ivesse, Middle English Jues, Middle English Juesse, Middle English–1500s Iewes, Middle English–1600s Iewesse, Middle English–1600s Jewesse, 1500s Iewas, 1500s Iuesse, 1600s– Jewess.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French jeuesse.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman jeuesse, jewesce and Middle French juiesse (13th cent. in Old French) < jeu Jew n. + -esse -ess suffix1.Perhaps attested earlier as the surname of Christina Gywes (1299; apparently a nickname since Jewish people were officially expelled from England in 1290), although it is unclear whether this should be interpreted as reflecting the Anglo-Norman or the Middle English word. Alternatively, the surname could reflect a form (with genitive ending -s) of Gywe, variant of Jue, pet form of the male forename Julian (Christina may have been the wife, widow, or servant of a man called Julian).
A Jewish girl or woman. Now somewhat old-fashioned and sometimes offensive.
