Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Persian tonbak, donbak.
Etymology: < Persian tonbak, donbak (pronounced /tombak/, /dombak/; Middle Persian tumbag ), probably ultimately of imitative origin (perhaps compare tom-tom n.). Perhaps compare earlier tambour n. and tabor n.1 Compare also darbuka n.In quot. 1662 at sense 1 via French.
1. In form tumbeck. A type of drum formerly used in India. Obsolete.
