Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Achtaragdit.

Etymology: < German Achtaragdit ( E. F. Glocker Generum et specierum mineralium (1847) 305) < Achtaragda (Russian Axtaragda ), the name of a river in Yakutia (now the Sakha Republic) in Russia, where the mineral was apparently first found + -it -ite suffix¹. Compare Russian axtaragdit (1868 or earlier).The coinage is sometimes attributed to A. Breithaupt, who studied the mineral (compare quot. 1865), but he uses the different German form Achtarandit (1853; < Achtaranda (Russian Axtaranda ), an alternative form of the river name + German -it -ite suffix¹); compare the following earlier English example, borrowed directly from this German form:1855 Amer. Jrnl. Sci. 69 354 Achtarandite is a pseudomorph after Helvin according to Breithaupt. Compare also German †Achtaryndit (J. I. 17/2 Achtaragdite, a doubtful mineral found in greyish-white or greenish-grey pyramidal tetrahedrons, on the banks of the river Achtaragda in Siberia, associated with Idocrase, Wiluite, and Grossular. According to Breithaupt, Achtaragdite is a pseudomorph derived from the alteration of Helvine.

1868 J. D. Dana Syst. Mineral. (ed. 5) 478 Achtaragdite, Russian, before 1847... Soiling the fingers like chalk. Also in tetrahedral crystals, or combinations of a dodecahedron and tetrahedron, but evidently pseudomorphous.
