Etymology: < post-classical Latin aetiologicus (1561 or earlier in medical context; 1582 or earlier in theological context) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek αἰτιολογικός inquiring into causes, causal < ancient Greek αἰτιολογία aetiology n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare earlier aetiological adj.
