[In Old English, alongside the regular to mēde , is found to mēdes , with an irregular genitive singular formed on the analogy of neuter nouns used in similar adverbial phrases, such as to leanes (see lean n.1). In Middle English the form medes in this phrase was perhaps apprehended as a plural.]
