Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic títt frequently, often, Old Swedish tit often, quickly (Swedish regional tidt quickly), Norwegian (Nynorsk) tidt often, Danish tidt (Danish tit often)), use as adverb of the neuter singular of the adjective represented by Old Icelandic tíðr frequent, customary (see tiding n.1). Compare titter adv., tittest adv., and titely adv.In the β. forms perhaps influenced by tide n.; compare tidely adv. 1. In the γ. forms perhaps influenced by tight adj. (compare later tightly adv. and the note at titely adv.).
