Etymology: Origin unknown.First attested in the grant of arms of the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers (see quot. 1546). The form opinicus also occurs as the name of Opinicus de Canistris (1296–1350), Italian priest and cartographer, who drew world maps in which geography was adapted to animal and human forms to make moral and religious points, a style which became a popular form of social and political commentary in the 17th–19th centuries. In quot. 2000 perhaps in the sense ‘an opiniated person’, by association with opinion n.
Heraldry.
An imaginary creature, frequently represented as having the head and wings of an eagle or griffin, the body and legs of a lion, and the tail of a camel. Also figurative.
