单词 titanium
释义

titaniumn.adj.

Brit. /tᵻˈteɪnɪəm/, /tʌɪˈteɪnɪəm/, U.S. /təˈteɪniəm/, /taɪˈteɪniəm/
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Titanium.
Etymology: < German Titanium ( M. H. Klaproth Beiträge zur chemischen Kenntniss der Mineralkörper I. (1795) 244) < Titan Titan n.1 + -ium -ium suffix, after Uranium uranium n., following a pattern of using names from Greek mythology. Compare later titan n.2Compare French †titanium (1795).
Chemistry.
A. n.
A silvery-grey transition metal element, atomic number 22, which is comparatively light in weight, strong and corrosion-resistant, and widely used (esp. in the form of alloys) in manufacturing. Symbol Ti.Titanium was discovered in 1791 when William Gregor, an amateur geologist, analysed a sample of ilmenite and found it contained a hitherto unknown constituent. The discovery took place near the parish of Manaccan in Cornwall, England, and Gregor named the new element Menakanit ( Chemische Ann. 1 (1791) 119). In 1795, Prussian chemist Martin Klaproth independently identified titanium as a constituent of rutile.Items typically manufactured from titanium include parts for aircraft and spacecraft, pipes, industrial machinery, and surgical implants.
