Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin tingibilis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin tingibilis (12th cent. in a British glossarial source) < classical Latin tingere tinge v. + -ibilis -ible suffix; in the later specific use in histology after German tingibel (1883 or earlier).
Originally: capable of being coloured, dyed, or stained. In later use Histology: capable of taking up a stain used in microscopy.Rare before use in the histological sense arises in the late 19th cent. Now chiefly in tingible body (see Compounds).Quot. 1885 shows non-tingible being used slightly earlier than tingible in the later histological sense.

Anat. 24 88)] Histology any of a type of dark-staining inclusion body found in the cytoplasm of macrophages and other phagocytic cells, representing the remnants of cells which have undergone phagocytosis; also as a modifier, esp. in tingible body macrophage.
