Etymology: < French briard (late 19th cent. or earlier), specific use as noun of briard of or relating to the Brie region (1838) < Brie , the name of a region of France (see Brie n.) + -ard -ard suffix.Compare French †chien de Brie, lit. ‘dog from Brie’ (1755 in Buffon; later also chien de berger de Brie, lit. ‘shepherd's dog from Brie’ and hence berger de Brie, the official name of the modern breed).
