Etymology: modern Latin (A. Smith: see quot. 1849), perhaps < Greek τίλων, a fish name used by Aristotle + ἄπιος distant.
A freshwater fish of the genus of this name, belonging to the family Cichlidæ, native to Africa but introduced elsewhere as a food fish or an aquarium species.
