Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: through- prefix, stitch n.1, thorough- prefix.
Etymology: In α. forms < through- prefix + stitch n.1 In β. forms < thorough- prefix + stitch n.1In use as adverb described by Johnson as ‘a low word’; compare also:1776 G. Campbell Philos. of Rhetoric I. ii. ii. 406 Those terms, which may be said to proclaim their vile and despicable origin..by associating disagreeable and unsuitable ideas, as bellytimber, thorowstitch, dumbfound.
