Etymology: < Thing n.2 + man n.1, after Old Icelandic þingmaðr person present at a Thing, member of parliament (plural þingmenn), also in plural form Þingmenn in specific use denoting the housecarls or bodyguards of Cnut and his successors in England; compare also the genitive compound Þingamenn in this specific sense. Compare Old Frisian thingmann, thingmonn, Old Saxon thingman (Middle Low German dincman), Old High German dingman, Old Swedish þingmän, plural (Swedish þingman, singular), Old Danish tingmand (Danish tingmand), all denoting speakers or attendees at administrative or legal assemblies. N.E.D. (1912) gives only the pronunciation (þi·ŋmæ̆n) /ˈθɪŋmən/.
