Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Tetrapodichnites.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Tetrapodichnites (E. Hitchcock 1837, in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. & Arts 32 175) < ancient Greek τετραποδ- , τετράπους four-footed (see tetrapod n.) + scientific Latin ichnites (see ichnite n.).
Palaeontology. Now rare and historical.
Usually in plural. Edward Hitchcock's name for: the fossil footprints of a four-footed animal, spec. a mammal.

1838 Rep. Brit. Assoc. Advancem. Sci. 1837 61 Professor Hitchcock then proposes for such footmarks the following classification. Class, Ichnites: 1st Family—Tetrapodichnites. 2nd Family—Sauroidichnites. 3rd family—Ornithichnites.]
1844 D. Page Rudim. Geol. 126 Professor Hitchcock adds a third class, tetrapodichnites, or the footsteps of some unknown four-footed animal.
1891 Cent. Dict. Tetrapodichnites, a hypothetical genus of animals whose tracks are known as tetrapodichnites.
1990 W. A. S. Sarjeant in K. Carpenter & P. J. Currie Dinosaur Systematics (1992) xxii. 300/1 Terming the impressions overall as ‘Ichnites,’ he [sc. Hitchcock] distinguished the reptile tracks as Sauroidichnites and formulated the category Tetrapodichnites for mammal tracks.
