Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Tellurium.
Etymology: < German †Tellurium (M. H. Klaproth 1798, in Chem. Annalen 1 100) < classical Latin tellūr- , tellūs earth (see Tellus n.) + German -ium -ium suffix, probably after German Uranium uranium n. Compare German Tellur (1800 or earlier, now the usual name for the element; compare earlier Tellurmetall (M. H. Klaproth 1798, in Chem. Annalen 1 101), Tellurit (1798: see tellurite n.), French tellure (1800, after German).
1. A chemical element, atomic number 52, which is a brittle, shiny, silvery-white semimetal occurring mainly in small amounts in metallic sulphide ores and used in specialized alloys and in the semiconducting material of solar panels. Symbol Te.
