Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek θηλυ-.
Etymology: < ancient Greek θηλυ-, combining form (in e.g. θηλυτόκος) of θῆλυς female, ultimately < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit dhā- to suck, drink (3rd singular present indicative dhayati), Gothic daddjan to suckle, Latvian dēls son, classical Latin fēlāre, fēllāre to suck, fīlius son.Recorded in the late 18th cent. in a derivative formed on a post-classical Latin word (thelyphthoric adj.). Independent formations within English are apparently found from the late 19th cent.
