Forms: α. 1500s–1600s terraplene, 1600s terraplana, terraplane, teraplene, 1700s–1800s terraplain. β. 1500s terreplaine, 1700s–1800s terreplain, 1800s terrepleine, 1700s– terreplein.
Etymology: In α. < Italian terrapieno, in Spanish terrapleno , in same sense; compare Italian terrapienare , Spanish terraplenar , to fill up with earth, < terra earth + pieno ( < Latin plēnus ) full; in β. < corresponding French terreplein . Both in French and English, the second element was sometimes erroneously taken as Italian piano , French plain plane, flat, level (so in Littré), whence the former spellings -plain , -plane : compare sense 2 A form terrapin apparently < Italian terrapieno appears in French in 1567 (Godefroy Compl.); compare terreplein vb. at Derivatives below.
Fortification.
1. Originally, The talus or sloping bank of earth behind a wall or rampart; hence, the surface of a rampart behind the parapet; and strictly, the level space on which the guns are mounted, between the banquette and the inner talus.
