Etymology: Probably < tele- comb. form + photographic adj. Compare German telephotographisch (1856 or earlier, originally with reference to a message transmitted by a process similar to that described below (in a science fiction context)). Compare slightly earlier telephote n. Compare also phototelegraphic adj.In quot. 1879, telephotographic apparatus translates Italian telefotografo telephotograph n.1; compare Italian telefotografico (1892 or earlier).
Now rare.
Designating any of various devices used for transmitting and reproducing images over a distance by converting light into electrical signals; spec. designating a device used to transmit images by telegraph. Cf. telephotograph n.1

1. Designating a compound camera lens in which the individual lenses are combined in such a way that the focal length of the lens is greater than its physical length, providing a relatively narrow field of view and powerful magnification. Chiefly in telephotographic lens. Cf. telephoto adj. 1.The first practical lens of this type was patented in 1891 by English optician Thomas Rudolphus Dallmeyer (1859–1906).
