Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: telephone n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < telephone n. + -ist suffix.With sense 2b compare German Telephonistin female telephone operator (1878 or earlier; now usually Telefonistin), Telephonist male telephone operator (1879 or earlier; now usually Telefonist).
1. An inventor of a form of telephony (with specific reference to Jean-François Sudre; see telephony n. 1). Cf. telephone n. 2. Obsolete. rare.
