telephone tag n. colloquial (originally and chiefly North American) a situation in which two people attempting to communicate by telephone repeatedly miss one another, often involving one or both people leaving a message asking to be called back; = phone tag n. at phone n.2 Compounds 2; cf. tag n.2 1.In quot. 1969: a situation in which both participants in a call attempt to avoid being the first person who is available to speak on the telephone.

1969 Daily News (N.Y.) 16 Aug. 4/4 The idea behind telephone tag is never to get on the phone first—even if you're the one who's doing the calling. It works like this: one big shot wants to call another, but he doesn't place the call himself—he's too busy for that. So his secretary dials the number and says, when the other guy gets on the line: ‘One moment please, Mr. Biggie is calling.’ But the other guy, he's not going to stand still for that. So his secretary waits until the caller picks up the phone and she says: ‘He'll be with you in a moment, sir. Would you hold please?’ This could go on all day—and sometimes it does.
