It works like this: one big shot wants to call another, but he doesn't place the call himself—he's too busy for that. So his secretary dials the number and says, when the other guy gets on the line: ‘One moment please, Mr. Biggie is calling.’ But the other guy, he's not going to stand still for that. So his secretary waits until the caller picks up the phone and she says: ‘He'll be with you in a moment, sir. Would you hold please?’ This could go on all day—and sometimes it does.
