Forms: α. 1500s tegge, 1500s–1800s tegg, 1600s– teg; β. 1500s–1600s tagge, 1800s tag.
Etymology: Of uncertain origin; perhaps Scandinavian: compare Swedish tacka a ewe. N.E.D. (1911) enters this under the double headword teg, tag and gives the pronunciation as (tæg) /tæɡ/.

a. A sheep in its second year, or from the time it is weaned till its first shearing; a yearling sheep; = hog n.1 4, hogget n. 2. Formerly restricted to the female; later applied to both sexes ( ewe teg and wether tegs). Also attributive as teg sheep, teg wool (see 1b).
