Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is usually maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. testaceo-fuscous adj. Brit. /tɛˌsteɪʃ(ɪ)ə(ʊ)ˈfʌskəs/, U.S. /tɛˌsteɪʃ(i)oʊˈfəskəs/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin testaceo-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin and scientific Latin testaceo-, combining form (in e.g. testaceofuscus : see testaceo-fuscous adj. at sense 2) of classical Latin testāceus (see testaceous adj.); compare -o- connective. In sense 1 after scientific Latin Testacea testacea n.Compare French testaceo- , German testaceo- . With testaceology n. at sense 1 compare German Testaceologie (1742 or earlier), scientific Latin testaceologia (1771 or earlier), French testaceologie (1789 or earlier). With testaceo-theology n. at sense 1 compare German Testaceotheologie (1743 or earlier), post-classical Latin testaceotheologia (1744 or earlier). In testaceo-fuscous adj. at sense 2 after scientific Latin testaceofuscus (1775 or earlier). In testaceo-piceous adj. at sense 2 after scientific Latin testaceopiceus (1808 or earlier).
