Etymology: Burmese, < taung hill + ya plot, field.
A temporary hillside clearing. Usually attributive, designating a method of shifting cultivation practised in Burma (Myanmar), and a system of forest management based on this (see quot. 1938) and employed in tropical countries. Cf. joom n.

1876 Encycl. Brit. IV. 560/2 The system of cultivation known in Bengal as the júm, that is clearing virgin soil by burning, cultivating it for one or two years, and then leaving it again to the jungle, is here [i.e. in Burma] extensively practised under the name of toungya cultivation.
