Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew ṭallīṯ.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew ṭallīṯ, ṭallēṯ cloak, prayer shawl, of uncertain origin, perhaps < Hebrew ṭallēl to cover, to roof (Nehemia 3:15 in an isolated attestation in the Bible, subsequently in post-biblical Hebrew; < Aramaic ṭallēl , in the same senses, corresponding to Hebrew ṣalal ). Compare tzitzit n.The Hebrew form attested in the most authentic ancient texts is ṭallēṯ , ṭallīṯ being a later variant. The β. forms reflect Ashkenazic pronunciation of the Hebrew word; compare Yiddish tales (plural taleysim ; < Hebrew). The plural form tallithim is after the Yiddish plural form taleysim, with remodelling after the α. singular forms. In Hebrew the attested plural forms are ṭalliyyōṯ and ṭallī̱ṯōṯ.
Judaism.

Cf. tzitzit n.Talliths typically take the form of a white rectangle with white, blue, or black stripes along the edges; they are sometimes used in wedding ceremonies as a canopy to cover the heads of the bride and bridegroom (cf. chuppah n.).
