Etymology: < tea n.1 + man n.1The alleged Russian word given in quot. 1857 at sense 2 is apparently not attested in Russian. In use with reference to Japan (see sense 2(b)) after Japanese chajin person knowledgeable about the tea ceremony, tea master (1684; 1403 in sense ‘person who harvests or manufactures tea’ (with reference to China); probably < Middle Chinese (where it is attested in the sense ‘tea picker’); compare Chinese chá cha n. and rén person). With sense 5 compare tea n.1 7c.
