Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: French tack-ravan; Persian taḵtravān.
Etymology: < (i) French †tack-ravan (1671 in the passage translated in quot. 1671) and its etymon (ii) Persian taḵtravān sedan chair, litter < taḵt takht n. + ravān, verbal adverb (and hence adjective) of raftan to go, walk, travel (present stem rav-).
Now rare.
In South and Central Asia: a covered litter carried by mules or camels, esp. (in early use) one used by a monarch or other high-ranking person.
