单词 table tennis
释义

table tennisn.

Brit. /ˈteɪbl ˌtɛnɪs/, U.S. /ˈteɪbəl ˌtɛnəs/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: table n., tennis n.
Etymology: < table n. + tennis n. Compare later ping-pong n.1The pamphlet 75 Years of Fun (1958), published by Parker Bros. Inc., and cited as the first example of this word in O.E.D. (ed. 2, 1989), appears to imply that table tennis was advertised in George Parker's games catalogue of 1887 (which now seems to be untraceable); however, no such notice appears in Parker's catalogues for 1888 onwards. Such a game at this date is likely to have been one of those denoted by sense 1. F. H. Ayres' catalogue (1886) advertises ‘Parlour Lawn Tennis—the Popular game of Lawn Tennis adapted for use in the Drawing-Room’, played with miniature rackets on a green baize court laid out on the floor, a precursor of the modern game but not yet using the name.
1. Any of various indoor games simulating lawn tennis, substituting some other equipment for the rackets and ball. Obsolete.

1890 Galveston (Texas) Daily News 21 Dec. 10/1 This season the difficulty was finally overcome by the invention of a game of table tennis. The inspiration for this game comes from the revival a few months ago of the ancient English game known as ‘tiddledy winks’... In the tennis game that has grown out of ‘tiddledy winks’, and which is known by the rather trying name of ‘tiddledy wink tennis’, a green felt mat..is ruled off, exactly like a lawn tennis court.
2. An indoor game based on lawn tennis, played with small bats and a hollow plastic ball, with a table in place of the court. Also called ping-pong.The origins of the game are obscure. Early versions were somewhat makeshift and sporadic, and consequently the sense of the example in quot. 1891 is not entirely certain. Quot. 1898 is accompanied by an illustration showing essentially the modern game. The hollow celluloid ball replaced the yarn-covered ball in or just before 1900, after which the game became a popular craze first in Great Britain and soon afterwards in the U.S. See also the etymological note.
