单词 tailye
释义

tailyetailzietaillien.

Brit. /ˈteɪl(j)i/, U.S. /ˈteɪl(j)i/, Scottish English /ˈtel(j)ɪ/
Forms: α. Middle English talȝe, Middle English taylyhe, Middle English–1500s tailȝe, 1500s taylie, tailye, tailze, tylye. β. Middle English– taillie, Middle English– tailyie, tailȝie, 1500s talȝie, taillȝie, 1500s– tailzie. (In Sc. was the regular representative of French ll mouillé /ɬ/; this after 1500 was sometimes printed ly or lyh according to the sound, but more usually lz from the similarity of written z to ȝ.)
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French taille, tailliee.
Etymology: In α form talȝe , tailȝe , tailyhe , < Old French taille cutting, = tail n.2 In β form tailȝie , < Old French tailliee, taillée, taillie (13th cent. in Godefroy) = Provençal talhada , Italian tagliata < late Latin or Common Romanic *tāliāta , noun feminine from past participle of tāliāre to cut: see tail v.2 and -ade suffix. In Old French, taille and tailliee were in some senses synonymous, and in Scots spelling the α and β forms ran together, the β forms in -ie at length prevailing.

Etymology: Early Scots talȝe , tailȝe , < French taille , inflection of tailler to cut, etc.; = corresponding English tail v.2 The modern spelling tailzie for both the verb and noun (see tailye n.) reflects substitution of z for ȝ as a result of the two letter forms becoming indistinguishable: compare discussion at Z n.
