Etymology: < Dutch tafereel panel, picture, diminutive of tafel table n. (for *tafeleel , with dissimilation of l..l to r..l). The 19th cent. corruption to taffrail , with accompanying change of sense, shows confusion of the ending -rel with rail n.2: compare quot. 1704 at sense 1e.
