Etymology: < French syénite, German syenit, < Latin Syēnītēs (lapis), (stone) of Syene, < Syēnē, Greek Συήνη, a town of upper Egypt, the modern Assouan.
Mineralogy.
A crystalline rock allied to granite, mainly composed of hornblende and feldspar, with or without quartz.
