Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin systylus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin systylus (1812 as a specific epithet (already in classical Latin as systȳlos : see systyle adj.); < ancient Greek συν- syn- prefix + στῦλος column: see styloid adj.) + -ous suffix.
Botany. rare.
1. In flowering plants: having the styles joined to form a single column. Obsolete.
