1947 Cohen & McGilvery in Jrnl. Biol. Chem. 171 132 We wish to suggest the term ‘synthetase’ for those enzymes creating a new molecule by the elimination of water between two substrate molecules, excluding the formation of phosphote esters and anhydrides.

Union Biochem. vi. 39 Enzymes catalysing the linking together of two molecules, coupled with the breaking of a pyrophosphate link in ATP, etc., will be known as ligases (pronounced with a short ‘i’ in English).
