Etymology: < book n. + man n.1Earlier currency is apparently implied by surnames such as Alan. Bokeman , Rog. Bukeman (both 1279), Joh. Bocman (1327), although the relevant sense is unclear (‘scribe’ has been suggested: compare sense 2).
