单词 adderbolt
释义

adderboltn.

Brit. /ˈadəbəʊlt/, U.S. /ˈædərˌboʊlt/
Forms:

α. late Middle English adderbolte, 1600s–1800s adderbolt; English regional 1800s edderbowt, 1800s– edderbout, 1800s– edtherbowt (Cheshire).

β. 1600s–1700s addersboult, 1700s addersbolt.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: adder n.1, bolt n.1
Etymology: In α. forms < adder n.1 + bolt n.1 In β. forms < the genitive of adder n.1 + bolt n.1Probably so called on account of its resemblance to a winged dragon (see adder n.1 1c; compare dragonfly n.), or perhaps on account of its being regarded as venomous (although evidence for this belief can only be found much later; compare adder n.1 3). The second element probably arose from the resemblance of the insect's body to a crossbow bolt (see bolt n.1 1).
In later use English regional (chiefly north-western).
A dragonfly. Cf. adder n.1 3.
