单词 booker
释义

bookern.

Brit. /ˈbʊkə/, U.S. /ˈbʊkər/
Forms: Old English bocr- (inflected form, rare), Old English bocyr- (inflected form, rare), Old English boecere (Northumbrian), Old English bokera (Mercian), Old English (Northumbrian)–early Middle English bocera, Old English–early Middle English bocere, Old English (chiefly Mercian)–early Middle English bokere, late Old English bochere (in transcript of lost MS), early Middle English bocare, 1500s–1600s 1800s– booker, 1900s buiker.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a word inherited from Germanic. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: book n., -er suffix1; book v., -er suffix1.
Etymology: Originally (i) cognate with or formed similarly to Old Saxon bōkari , Old High German buohhāri , buohhēri , Gothic bokareis < the Germanic base of book n. + the Germanic base of -er suffix1, subsequently partly (ii) < book n. + -er suffix1, and partly (iii) < book v. + -er suffix1.In early use frequently rendering classical Latin scrība scribe n.1 in various biblical uses (see discussion at scribe n.1). Also attested as a surname in the Middle English period, although such names can be difficult to distinguish from those reflecting Middle English bouker bleacher of cloth (compare buck v.1); compare:1255 in B. Thuresson Middle Eng. Occup. Terms (1950) 220 Will. le Bocer.1332 in B. Thuresson Middle Eng. Occup. Terms (1950) 220 Joh. le Boker. N.E.D. (1887) includes a spurious sense, marked ‘techn.’ and with no further definition, attested by a single quotation based on a misreporting of a speech by Henry Austin Bruce (1815–95) in Parliament on 14 June 1864, and derived from the following or its source:1864 Daily Tel. 15 June With regard to the finishers and bookers..representation had since been made to the Government. Other contemporary reports of the speech show that the word used was hooker (compare hooker n.1 3):1864 H. A. Bruce in Parl. Deb. 3rd Ser. 175 1719 The Government had no difficulty in including the finishers and hookers in the Bill.
