Etymology: Of Scandinavian origin: compare obsolete Danish sveibaget, also Danish sveirygget, †svegrygget, Swedish dialect svegryggad, in the same sense.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈsway-backed.

Of an animal, esp. a horse: Having a downward curvature of the spinal column; strained in the back, as by overwork. Also transferred.
