Origin: A borrowing from Latin; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin suprēmum, suprēmus.
Etymology: < classical Latin suprēmum, neuter of suprēmus highest (see supreme adj. and n.), probably after German Supremum (1927 or earlier).
Mathematics.
The smallest number that is greater than or equal to each of a given set of real numbers; an analogous quantity for a subset of any other ordered set. Abbreviated sup. Contrasted with infimum n.
