Forms: Also 1500s vitz-, viz-, 1600s vize-gerent.
Etymology: < medieval Latin vicegerent-, vicegerens, < Latin vicem (accusative) stead, place, office, etc., and gerens, present participle of gerĕre to carry, hold. So French vicegérent (also -gérant), Italian vicegerente, Spanish vicegerente, Portuguese vice-gerente. The hyphen, formerly not uncommon, is now rarely used in this and the preceding words.
