Etymology: < post-classical Latin supremitat-, supremitas highest honour (5th cent.), supreme power or authority (15th cent.; 1552 in a British source; earlier in senses ‘death’, (in plural) ‘extremities’ (4th cent.)) < classical Latin suprēmus supreme adj. + -tās ( see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Middle French supremité (1481 in an apparently isolated instance). Compare supremacy n.
