Etymology: < (i) Middle French superscription, superscripcion heading of a document (1339), address of a letter (1371), piece of text written above (e.g. an image) (a1389), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin superscription-, superscriptio piece of text written or inscribed on or above (Vetus Latina, Vulgate: see note), heading (4th cent.), (of a letter) address, direction (late 8th cent.) < classical Latin superscrīpt- , past participial stem of superscrībere superscribe v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare (in a similar range of meanings) Middle French supscription (15th cent.; French suscription).In the Vulgate, post-classical Latin superscriptio is sometimes used to translate ancient Greek ἐπιγραφή inscription, piece of writing on a coin or similar (see epigraph n.).
