单词 butterflower
释义

butterflowern.

Brit. /ˈbʌtəflaʊə/, U.S. /ˈbədərˌflaʊər/
Forms: see butter n.1 and flower n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: butter n.1, flower n.
Etymology: < butter n.1 + flower n., probably so called on account of the appearance of the flowers (like later buttercup n. 2a and gold cup n. 1).Compare Dutch boterbloem buttercup (16th cent.), German Butterblume , denoting various plants with yellow flowers (17th cent. or earlier). Quots. 1607 and 1759 at sense 1 apparently reflect popular notions about the origins of the name. The children's game described in quot. 1892 at sense 1 is also sometimes adduced as a supposed explanation of the name's origin. Compare also note at buttercup n.
Now chiefly historical.
