Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French supplice; Latin supplicium.
Etymology: < (i) French supplice punishment (1419 in Middle French in derrain supplice death penalty, literally ‘last punishment’; 1481 denoting non-capital physical punishment), torture, torment, suffering (1480 in eternelz supplices (plural) denoting the torments of hell; end of the 15th cent. denoting both terrible physical suffering and (in extended use) extreme anguish; already in the second quarter of the 13th cent. in Anglo-Norman in the oath par la seint supplice! in the sense ‘sacrifice’, with specific reference to Christ), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin supplicium reparation, atonement, appeal for help, entreaty, punishment, extreme suffering, torment < supplic- , supplex (see supple adj.) + -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare Old Occitan supplici (1520), Catalan suplici (14th cent.), Italian supplizio (1306 as †supplicio).
